Meet the Team – Amanda Johnson

Marketing and Communications Manager

Meet Our Marketing and Communications Manager: Connecting Creativity with Engineering

In this edition of our “Meet the Team” series, we’re putting the spotlight on Amanda Johnson, our Marketing and Communications Manager. Marketing may not be as technically driven as engineering, but Amanda plays a vital role in bridging the technical brilliance of our projects to the wider world, using creativity, strategy, and a bit of humour to keep everyone engaged.

A Creative Spark: What Inspired Amanda’s Journey

Amanda’s passion for marketing and communications stems from her love for creativity—she enjoys finding new ways to tell stories about familiar things. Her career path has taken her through various sectors, including government, private industries, and not-for-profits, providing her with a rich tapestry of experiences. For Amanda, it’s always the people who make a workplace special. She fondly reflects on the intelligent and fascinating individuals she’s worked with throughout her career and still keeps in touch with colleagues from her very first job.

A Day in the Life: Marketing at INCITIAS

If you ask Amanda’s colleagues what her role is at INCITIAS, you’d get a mix of answers—ranging from the serious, such as requesting content for the website and managing social media, to the light-hearted, like “causing levity” in the Melbourne office. Her presence is undoubtedly missed when she’s not around.

Officially, Amanda’s role is to take our technically complex projects and craft them into narratives that communicate just how talented and innovative our team is. She also helps ensure our growing online presence reflects our capabilities and values. As part of her current focus, Amanda is driving growth in our LinkedIn audience and exploring other potential social media platforms.

On any given day, the responsibilities can vary widely—from managing brand awareness campaigns, designing external communications, maintaining our website, reviewing bids for consistency, to organizing social events and team bonding activities. The versatility and the dynamic nature of her role mean there’s rarely a “typical” day in her calendar.

Building Team Culture: Social Events and Bonding Activities

Amanda is also the mastermind behind many of the social events and team bonding activities at INCITIAS. Whether it’s a casual get-together, monthly lunch, Christmas party, or a team-building workshop, Amanda ensures there’s something happening to bring the team closer together. These events are crucial in building camaraderie among the team, allowing everyone to unwind, connect, and celebrate both big and small successes.

Amanda’s Marketing Content Competition was one such initiative which goes beyond just generating content. It was a fun, competitive way for team members across our global offices to engage and showcase their work. It’s this kind of creative approach which helps foster a collaborative and dynamic company culture. Amanda remarked “I was impressed, with the competitiveness the whole team displayed in the Marketing Competition this year! We had some fantastic contributions and insightful ideas the team came to me with.”

The Joys and Challenges of Marketing in Engineering

“Working with engineers isn’t entirely new for me—I’ve been married to an electrical engineer for years,” Amanda joked. While marketing in the engineering field comes with its own challenges, Amanda finds learning the intricacies of energy transition and equipment solutions, fascinating, especially being involved in the innovative approaches the team brings to complex problems.

Memorable Moments and Highlights

Amanda loves the occasional moments of humour which break up the intensity of engineering work. One such instance was when she mispronounced “FPSO” (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) as “fiipuhsoo.” To this day, her pronunciation is the standard and a light-hearted inside joke within the office.

Of course, it hasn’t just been laughs—some significant highlights include watching the INCITIAS Directors present at industry conferences, where their extensive knowledge shines. She also recalls with pride representing INCITIAS at the 2023 National Export Awards, where the company earned recognition for its dedication to professional services.

Life Beyond Work

Outside the office, Amanda keeps herself busy managing her family’s daily routines and keeping up with the activities of her two young children. On weekends, she admits she’d rather have someone else take over planning meals and doing dishes. She also enjoys travel and seeking out the best gluten-free culinary experiences, a journey inspired by her diagnosis of coeliac disease. Amanda’s husband deserves special credit for enduring frequent and long drives, flights and adventures in pursuit of the perfect gluten-free meal!

Amanda’s move from Queensland to Melbourne was motivated by her desire for cooler weather—a decision she often questions during Melbourne’s cold snaps. But it’s all part of the adventure, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
