FPSO Refurbishment Project
INCITIAS provided solutions for a West African FPSO requiring refurbishment, to enable continued offloading operations.
A West African client engaged INCITIAS to undertake a study to evaluate alternative methods, following an inspection of their FPSO and its offloading CALM buoy in 2021.
The operator decided to replace the FPSO top chains and refurbish the CALM buoy. During this time, the operator wanted the FPSO to continue operations with an alternative method of offloading produced oil.
INCITIAS completed a series of mooring analyses, assessed the impact of corrosion on the mooring chains and identified and evaluated several options for alternative offloading methods.
Following INCITIAS’ study, the client decided to progress with offloading from the stern of the FPSO using a floating hose with the tanker tandem moored.
Subsequently, INCITIAS was awarded Phase 2 scope, which included the following:
We look forward to working with the client and partners for this next phase to ensure the continuity of smooth operations for the FPSO.
For this project, INCITIAS identified multiple options and recommended an alternate method for marine operations to confidently and safely conduct offloading operations while the CALM buoy is refurbished
The client decided to proceed with a tandem mooring and offloading arrangement, where the FPSO offloads directly to the shuttle tanker. This resulted in a significant change to the marine operations at the terminal. To help the client define the marine operations for this new arrangement INCITIAS proposed completing navigation simulations to identify the requirements to complete offloading operations safely.
We developed an RFQ and approached several suppliers (with a class-approved ship manoeuvring simulator to complete the navigational studies). After selection, INCITIAS worked with BMT to finalise the methodology and details for the simulations.
Over the course of 2 days, BMT (Fareham, UK) ran 21 simulation cases, including vessel approach, station-keeping and normal and emergency departure conditions. INCITIAS staff (Matthew Hillbrich, Bastiaan Scheepers and Christopher Bonay) participated remotely throughout the simulations and for the workshop debriefing.
These results were presented to the client and used to demonstrate the validity of the proposed marine procedures.
