Meet the INCITIAS Team

Amanda Johnson

Principal Consultant – Paul Duncan

Paul Duncan is a Principal Consultant at INCITIAS. Having worked with Holger on various projects since 2007, they enjoyed a mutually respected working relationship. After finishing the technical design of the Malta LNG import terminal, it was the perfect opportunity to work together, and Paul joined INCITIAS in 2017.

Typically customer-facing, Paul is part of the INCITIAS Senior Management team, working with discipline engineers and principal engineers and client teams to help deliver studies for projects in the LNG and energy sector. A usual day would start with project emails, catching up with the team, liaising with clients on scheduling and preparing for work scope. Speaking with INCITIAS’ clients, management meetings and project work including preparing procedures, quality system planning, risk workshops, etc.

When discussing his career course, Paul recalls “I was keen avid sailor, competing throughout high school, interested in America’s Cup yachts.” He laughs and adds “I wanted to build the winning America’s Cup yacht and decided I would like to design them”. To pursue this, I studied Naval Architecture at the Australian Maritime College (AMC) in Tasmania.  After graduation, I discovered that yachts are a hobby and cottage industry, and moved towards working with small craft, workboats and marine waterjet propulsion systems.

2007 provided the opportunity to move into the energy industry, the best move he ever made. Paul thoroughly enjoys working with colleagues who are motivated, committed, and conscious of delivering projects safely. “Time, budget and safety are drivers of the project, and the industry moves swiftly,” Paul explains.

Efficiencies and safety are high priorities for Paul. The concept of ‘what you walk past, you accept’ and the empowering of all staff to halt work, if they see an unsafe situation. Paul speaks emotively about the genuine expectation and concern for safety and the environment. Trying to minimise the impact on the environment and treating it with respect. Whilst not the inspiration to join the industry, it is the motivation for remaining in the energy industry for the last two decades.

A favourite part of his role includes the expatriate component, travel and on-site project rotations. Being on the ground in the project office, living and working across the globe. Part of Paul’s role includes visiting construction yards to evaluate, monitor and inspect ships. Experiencing and immersing himself in different cultures is GREAT FUN. Some of the inspections, really stick out in his mind. “There was one inspection on Kiribati, a tiny Micronesian island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean; the people I interacted with were some of the happiest people I have ever met!” Paul recalls.

‘Working on the innovative mooring system designs for floating LNG units in British Columbia was one of the most enjoyable projects I’ve been a part of. fantastic to be part of a team (INCITIAS) that can deliver truly world-leading original equipment designs utilising proven equipment in new ways.”

Having recently joined the Whitehorse branch of the Victorian SES,

In his time away from the office, Paul enjoys adventuring in planes, cars, mountain bikes and on foot. His personal time, accompanied by his partner, is often spent hiking in the mountains, traversing winding roads and skiing. Travelling has been a life-long hobby; Paul enjoys being immersed in other cultures and eating where the locals eat. His favourite food is char kway teow, a Malaysian street hawker dish (the hotter the better!). His favourite country to spend time in is Norway, where he particularly enjoys alpine skiing.
