Meet the INCITIAS Team

Amanda Johnson

Director – Bastiaan Scheepers

Bastiaan joined Holger Kelle to establish and serve as a Founder and Director of INCITIAS. Bastiaan explains, ‘In 2015, Holger called me, and the decision to form INCITIAS was an easy one and confirmed quickly. It was a fantastic and exciting opportunity to work together again, having previously worked together at INTECSEA. I completed the first oil for the FPSO Front Puffin in Nigeria and returned to Australia, securing my first INCITIAS project with Trelleborg, and began to expand our business, hiring Christopher Bonay, our Naval Architect and mooring specialist.’

As Directors, both Holger and Bastiaan agreed it was important and a key difference for INCITIAS Senior Management team to be hands-on and involved in day-to-day project operations, business management and development. ‘Our management team is always involved in our project operations. It is a point of difference, part of our competitive advantage and a highlight of our business,’ Bastiaan continues, ‘The staff member you work together with developing a project, will also be part of the team and involved in the project. Clients see continuity in who they work with.’

Bastiaan’s decision to pursue engineering started in high school. Using the process of elimination, he ruled out a medical career, as he wasn’t keen on blood. He had an interest and excelled with numbers and rational education, enjoyed designing and problem-solving, so logically landed in mechanical engineering. Bastiaan quietly admitted during our interview, that he had placed 4th in an Italian-wide LEGO championship in 1985. His vision, affinity and creativity for design started early on.

After studying mechanical engineering at Università Degli Studi di Perugia, Bastiaan started working with Procter and Gamble subsidiary Fameccanica in Italy. In 2002 Bastiaan moved with his partner to Australia, settling in Melbourne. Started with Omni Engineering as an ABB Robot system integrator building machinery in the automotive industry for Ford, Holden, Mitsubishi, and Toyota. Following this, he joined Trelleborg, progressing through the ranks to Manager of the Offshore Integrated Mooring business unit.

During this time Bastiaan also completed his MBA with Melbourne Business School. Bastiaan consulted with Ernst and Young for the Australian Government Transport Department program/project frameworks and before INCITIAS Bastiaan was at INTECSEA, completing projects based in Singapore and Lagos.  Bastiaan’s career in the energy industry has spanned more than 17 years.

A personal triumph for Bastiaan was seeing the completed Mina Justa hose reel, in 2018. ‘Such an incredible experience, walking inside the fabricator workshop in Italy, it was a very intense emotion seeing the design actualised. The results were tangible, the workshop was filled with the equipment INCITIAS had designed and built. The feeling hasn’t changed either – it is still quite humbling to see these, my designs come together,’ Bastiaan remarked proudly. Commenting that ‘the opportunities and challenges of designing solutions for unique problems and then building the machinery around the unique solutions, our original equipment, is a very satisfying part of the job.’

Bastiaan describes the favourite element of his director role as supporting INCITIAS’ team growth and aiding our clients to grow their businesses. ‘Travelling overseas for work is also quite an enjoyable part of the role.’ Bastiaan continues, ‘I enjoy working together with clients in their local area and meeting colleagues, developing the face-to-face rapport.’

Enjoying his work/life balance, Bastiaan can often be found in the kitchen, cooking for friends and family. A particular favourite to make is arrostincini, Italian skewers made with lamb (from the Abruzzo region). Beyond his culinary pursuits, he enjoys gliding at 10,000ft, cycling and generally staying fit.
