RSV Nuyina’s anchorage at Mawson station
Mooring Analysis
INCITIAS was contracted by Australian Maritime Technologies on behalf of the Australian Antarctic Division to undertake mooring simulations for the research supply vessel (RSV) Nuyina off Mawson research station in Antarctica.
Nuyina meaning ‘southern lights’ in palawa kani, the language of Tasmanian Aborigines, pronounced noy-yee-nah.
During the refuelling operation for Mawson station, the RSV Nuyina will moor on the western side of West Arm and a floating hose will transfer fuel oil from the RSV Nuyina to an onshore pipeline which extends across West Arm and then to the fuel bunker via a flexible floating hose across Horseshoe Harbour.
Mooring simulations are used by ship owners/managers to size the components of the ship’s mooring equipment and to understand the limiting environmental criteria in which the ship can remain safely on station. Simulations can be undertaken during FEED or detailed design when input to the design and specification of the mooring equipment is most useful. But they may also be undertaken after the fact to gain an understanding of the limiting environmental conditions of an existing mooring system.
The aim of INCITIAS’ mooring simulations was to determine what the meteorological conditions were that would limit the safe mooring of the RSV Nuyina when tethered to a bollard on West Arm with two synthetic hawsers.
The simulations showed the RSV Nuyina can safely moor in the specified wind conditions, the simulations also revealed the vessel may display fishtailing instability in certain conditions and recommendations were made to ensure the vessel remains dynamically stable during the refuelling operation at Mawson station.
INCITIAS has in-depth knowledge and experience in performing mooring simulations refined over 25-years of experience in the study of the dynamics of floating structures for the offshore energy industry. This experience and knowledge enabled INCITIAS to provide useful and actionable information to Australian Maritime Technologies in the specification of the mooring bollard, the ships hawsers and operating procedures.
Our mooring simulations were completed using the ANSYS-AQWA hydrodynamic software package with non-dimensional wind and current coefficients determined from wind tunnel measurements by the Dutch aerospace laboratory.
The results of the analysis were used to prepare the field layout drawings, verify the capacity of the mooring equipment, and provide input to the operating procedures of the RSV Nuyina.
