INCITIAS devised a solution detailing concepts for offshore CO2 sequestration via virtual pipeline.
INCITIAS devised a solution for a State-Owned oil Major, drawing on our in-depth knowledge of gas and chemical shipping tanker design, offshore mooring/loading systems design and marine operations and construction.
To address and overcome the cost and schedule challenges associated with building dedicated high pressure offshore sequestration piping, INCITIAS detailed various concepts for offshore CO2 Sequestration via virtual pipeline.
Our work evaluated various technologies, costing and comparing options for CO2 transportation, offshore storage and re-injection into depleted subsea wells utilising CO2 transportation by ship, in a closed-loop (virtual pipeline) versus a traditional subsea pipeline system.
We compared refrigerated and pressurised transportation, reviewing the ability of existing LPG tankers to be converted, utilising new technologies. INCITIAS also evaluated material considerations in CO2 service, assessed technology maturity of new storage and offshore transfer systems and existing subsea wells, riser and injection compression system, and CO2 offshore loading systems for CO2 suitability and system reliability.
Non-linear logistic modelling was utilised to obtain stochastics for operating and cost performances, enabling greater insight for the various approaches’ performance. Reliability was a key factor, as the CO2 sequestration at the well side was to be uninterrupted. Our INCITIAS model was previously developed in SIMUL8 for a spoke and hub 100 Island LNG distribution model and since adopted for CO2 distribution.
The models took into consideration met-ocean conditions from the last 10 years at wellheads and CO2 hubs, projected CO2 production profiles and shipping reliability metrics.
Our staff studied various technology to evaluate the CO2 emission of the logistic chain and determine the ability of existing LPG tankers conversion to CO2 tankers.
